Sleep?

boceke Oct 18, 2005 10:06 PM

Hey all again,
Another quick neophyte question. Either I have a lazy bum of a python or snakes seem to sleep for a large part of the day (yeah they're nocturnal i know), i was just wondering about how many hours a day they sleep? Discounting the possibility that he's doing gymnastics while i get my meager 5-6 hours of college sleep and laying in his hide box for the rest of the day, do I have just a lazy snake? I ask because I'd like to handle him more but I'm afraid to pull the hide box off the top of him and pick him up as i'm sure it's important that he knows there's a safe place in his cage he can go w/o fear of being messed around with. So if anyone knows their average sleep amount or has suggestions as to how to be able to handle him more w/o upsetting his sense of security let me know.

Thanks all,
-Eli

They probably DO spend more time sleeping than not. It varies from one snake to another though, I think. If you want to hold him just pick him up, he'll catch a few winks later LOL. When to handle a snake and when not to needs not be a concern, unless of course it's a gravid female , or ill. Enjoy.

If you have had your ball for a while, and it's established in its eating patterns, I see no reason why you can't take the hide off and handle. Be careful not to startle but move in sure motions and lift from the back or rear.

I handle my balls all the time (I have 4) I take them from their hide boxes and have seen no timidity about returning to their hides after I handle them. Of course, I do not handle after a feed and for several days afterwards to avoid a "mess." My husband has been crapped on and pissed on, fortunately, I have managed to avoid both those incidents so far!

Ahhhh! I plead the 5th! I will admit; however, that he is not "snake-minded and often does things because he wants to regardless of contradicting information...although...he purchased the snakes for me!
