Ball python display cage

animalmaniac Jul 21, 2003 11:45 AM

Hi everyone,
I am interested in building a bigger, nicer looking cage for my 28" male ball python. I have a good amount of carpentry experience and many tools. I'm interested in making a cage about 1' high, 1 1/2' deep, and 2 1/2-3' long. Does this sound big enough to you all? I will either use 1X8 finishing boards or 1/2" plywood. I want it to look nice, so I was thinking of using my router to cut out two tracks for plexiglass to slide in, very secure and nice looking. I'll have a mostly screen top for the heat lamp, and nice looking climbing branches. Would it be alright to sand and varnish the outside of the cage to make it look extra nice. Also, is regular linoleum ok for the bottom of the cage, I have some left over from flooring two small rooms? Are their any "tricks of the trade" or good websites you all recommend? I would really appreciate any info you can give me.

Thanks,
Taylor

Sounds like you've put a good amount of thought into your plans. I hope everything comes out ok. You might consider extending the 6 inch depth of your design though. I have my bp in a 36w X 18d X 18h tank, which should be good to keep her in forever! The only thing I regret about my tank is it's screen top. I have siliconed some plexiglass over most of the top (except for the heat lamp slots), and it still doesn't hold humidity well. If I were going to build my own cage, I would certainly put some serious thought into avoiding humidity problems and come up with a creative design with a solid top.

Good luck!
Jeremy

Okay...I missed the 1 before the 1/2' on your depth. That sounds just about perfect.

the height is fine but the floor size cpuld be about a foot longer
1x1.5x4 feet would be ok but im building a 1.5x2x4.5 feet
