Crazy weather, opinions needed!

phiber_optikx Oct 19, 2005 12:04 AM

The weather here is all screwed up right now (that's Missouri for ya) it is 85 in the day and 50 at night. last week it was 60 in the day and 43 at night. since the weather is back up, do you think I will be able to find any black rats? There is a grassy hillside I go to that has limestone deposites all along it, wooded at the top, with a little stream flowing at the base. faces east. I know... practically perfect black ratsnake spot. Never seen one there! I have found browns, ringnecks, garters, and speckled kings there. NEVER a black ratsnake! it really iritates me. But my question is, do you think they will be back out, or have they most likely gone into early hibernation?

fyi,i found a very large elaphe o. obsoleta just on the outskirts of washington,d.c. on november 20th of 2003,a very fresh d.o.r....this was surrounded by quite good-looking habitat, quite sure it was no escapee...

What about road-cruising in the summertime? I can't help but find them anywhere along the western Illinois border. Hey, if there is a lot of speckled kings around there the black rats might keep their distance. Rat snakes are just about their favorite food, and the rats don't like the smell of kingsnake either!

BTW, the nature.net forum for reptiles and amphibians has many knowledgable Missouri herpers on it, you may want to ask there...

Later,

Matt
