this doesn't look normal to me

cfcstl Oct 19, 2005 12:15 AM

This is my son's veiled and he has kept pretty good care of him since we received him as a baby. Lately, he has developed the white areas on his head and it doesn't appear to be shedding off. It only appears to be on the ridges of his head and I was wondering what this might be. His daily food consists of crickets and he gets misted daily. We don't give the calcium or vitamin powder like we used to since he became an adult. He gets dust on the crickets about every two weeks. The rest of his body seems normal and colorful, so I only posted a closeup of his head. He is about 1 1/2 years old. Does anyone have any ideas?

This is exactly what has happened with my veiled after I cut back on his calcium doses. I dont know if not providing the calcium has anything to do with it. He acts normal as of now, eats great, drinks plenty, is fairly active and gets plenty of sleep. Humidity is at 90% and temp ranges from 82 at the top to 75 at the bottom of his cage. He is taking a visit to the vet on Friday for his fecals and a check up. So, I will find out then.

P.S- Just take him to the vet, cost me 40 bucks for the visit and it will keep the chummers from bashing you on here for not doing it. People dont wanna answer questions, they just wanna give ya hell. Hope this helps.

Where did this comment come from? I looked back thru your posts and did not see anyone bashing you. Carlton gave you advice both times and jusmebabe was simply making a point about trying to get a diagnosis on a forum. I would certainly hope that your reason for bringing him to the vet would be because you care about your cham's health not to keep people from "bashing" you.

I notice that often the more rigid parts of the skin (like the crests of casques, brow ridges, and along the dorsal spines) don't shed as easily and often take longer to actually come off. If you rub the areas with a damp cloth does anything come loose? Doesn't look like infection or fungal...there would be lumpy irregular margins with discharge and sores most likely. Does the color change at all with temp, stress or activity? It might be an odd pigmentation.

When I notice my chams are having a hard time shedding, I'll put them in the bathroom and turn on a hot shower and let the room fill with steam. I usually leave the shower on for about 15 minutes and set the chams cage about 3 or 4 feet away on the counter ( since the steam rises). After turning off the shower, I'll leave them in the bathroom with the door shut for about an hour. By the next day, the shed is usually done. I mostly have to do this for my female veiled, since she is on a strict diet with her food and water, She tends to have a harder time shedding. It also works for my gecko as well.
