Kassina maculata (red legged running frog) questions

taz2wild Oct 19, 2005 10:56 AM

I bought one of these frogs about three weeks ago for my son and I found him dead this morning. Can anyone give me any insight into the care requirements of these guys so we can try it again. Housing-substrate,humidity levels, etc. Thanks

I had two Kassina
I read up on them before I got them. They are from africa and although they have the toes of a tree frog, they are really a reed frog living by rivers. I have housed my Kassina with my whites tree frogs for 2 years successfully. I keep my 39gal tank at 70 to 80 degrees in the day and about 65 -70 at night time. I also found that the black light bulbs from Repta Sun make the frogs very active at night - more so then the red night lights.
Humidity is kept at 70 to 80 percent. Up till recently this was a mistery to me but I have it under control now. I took some advice and bought enough gravel - fish gravel - to cover the bottom of the tank with an inch. Then I put a two layer covering of mesh screening over top that. - so the rocks do not come to the surface and frogs and eat them which can cause death - After that I covered the screen with Bed A Beast which is great - it comes in these dry pressed blocks and you soak it to get 4 quarts of great substrate ! It hold humidity well and if to much water get spilled either by the frogs or you it sinks to the gravel so it doesnt cause alot of mess.
Kassina are nocturnal. They will be most active at night, so dont be alarmed if its not moving around during the day. Depending on the size - mine are small - feed them crix about 1/2 to 3/4 inch. Even though I have done it I do not recomend housing these frogs with others. My whites are getting so big now I will have to move the kassina soon or they are going to become lunch.
These are very fun frogs. Most times if you can catch them eating at night youll notice they do not really jump around to get there crix. Rather, they stalk them, or walk around and sneak up on them. My Kassina never liked Crix dust. So when gut load your crix, just be sure to feed them some veggies or fruits high in vitamins. I feed mine squash, romain lettuce, carrots, corn, oatmeal, apples, potatoes, and I have a shallow bowl of water in for them as well. Make sure you get a stone bowl from the pet store so they can crawl back out.
Hey if I have forgot anything feel free to respond again
Better luck with your new kassina -
Sarah, & Nixel -my kassina
P.s Also wash hands very well before handling. I made the mistake of letting my best friends daughter hold my one Kassina (Pashue) before washing and she died withing a week. I think she had hair spray on her hands
