Tree frog swallowed aquarium gravel

crazy_ewok Oct 19, 2005 12:30 PM

Hello. I have a gray tree frog that swallowed an aquarium rock three days ago. It wasn't a huge rock...but it wasn't exactly small either; I can see the bulge in its stomach when it sits a certain way. I've seen it get ahold of rocks before, but up until now it always spit them back out. Is there anything I can do? Can frogs throw rocks back up after they've swallowed them or is it just stuck there? Also, I haven't fed the frog since then. Should I, or would it do no good?

Thanks.

Hmm, well, you dont have much of a choice. Unless you want to take the poor thing to a vet and have it removed, your going to have to cross your fingers and hope it can pass it. you can try giving him warm water (not hot, just warm) soaks to help it pass.

Either way, the gravel removed after the first incident. Frogs shouldnt be kept on gravel fot that exact reason. If your frog pulls through you need to get him off of gravel, theres plenty of other substraits out there. I would highly recomend coco fibre.

Good luck!

OK. Thanks for the advice! It's been almost 2 weeks since he swallowed the rock, and he's still eating and seems to be getting better. I am definitely going to get rid of the gravel if he does get better...believe it or not, I had this same thing happen to a firebellied toad and it died as a result. You'd think I'd have learned my lesson!
