Should I get a second heat-pad?

jennrosefx Oct 19, 2005 04:30 PM

Up until now, I've been using a heating mat under one side of the tank to keep it at around 85 degrees...and the other side has just naturally been in the seventies (allthough, sometimes higher...I live in Southern California). It's starting to get almost cold outside now though, and I just looked at my tank- 85 on the warm side...and 68 on the cool! Gah! So, should I buy a second heating mat to make sure the cooler side is always around 75...or will she just hang out on the warmer side on colder days and not to worry about it.

You don't need a second heat pad... it might be more prudent to place another hide box more towards the center of the cage, so the snake can choose to hide in a warmer location if it wants. Cornsnakes can handle low temperatures... Even as far down as the 40s... The higher temperatures are necessary for digestion though.

"You keep WHAT in your freezer?"
"Mice. And rats. If that bothers you, I can call them 'cows' instead."

She has three hides...kinda. One on the warm side, and one on the cool side, and one in the center that she made all by herself under her water bowl. I see right now though that she's all curled up under the aspen shavings towards the warm side...so she's probably nice and comfy.
