turtle biting

sophie262 Oct 19, 2005 08:00 PM

I have 2 red-ear sliders, one male and one female. They're in a 60 gal. tank. Lately, I have noticed the male biting the female on the back right leg/foot. It's always in the same area. They're a little over 3 yrs. in age.

It always seems to happen more when she is trying to bask and he will latch on and not let her go. Is there anything that can be done to stop/prevent this from happening?

I'm not an expert in RES breeding by any means, but I think they are trying to breed. I would think that the female would lay the eggs in dirt, but I have no idea. Like suppose you only have a turtle ramp, and not half dirt, a divider with the other half water. Would they still lay the eggs on a possibly rollable surface? I would like to find out more about breeding myself.

part land with enough of a dirt area to lay the eggs is needed to breed. if there is no suitable place to lay the eggs, i have heard of them laying them in the water. there are too many res as is, i would highly suggest not breeding them for the sake of their babies. not to mention they are not supposed to be sold as pets in the U.S. if they are under 4".

we dont have any intentions of them breeeding. what we're concerned with is his biting her leg and not letting it go until me or my husband has to come and actually seperate them. we've done everything that we can think of.

we've seen them try to mate- she's usually not interested in him when he's interested in her. and vice versa.

if you have tried everything with them together, and he is still injurying her, they need to be separated. that means a complete new setup for one of them. unfortunately some just dont get along and it is your responsibility to do what is best for them.
