Hi,
I finally got some pics of my Kangaroo rat. It is a girl and I named her Jill. She is nocturnal, so when I get her out I have to turn off most of the lights or she hides under my shirt and goes to sleep. She has chewn up all of her nesting material, and one night I had her out and she was running around and cheweed a bunch of holes in my shirt so now I make shure to have an old towel on my lap. Her tail has gray hair on top and white hair on the bottom. At the end instead of laying flat against her tail it sticks out. so she has a tuft on the end of her tail.

Now that's cute! She has such a beautiful, shiny coat. Where'd you get her?

I got her in south central Oregon. Just north of Christmas valley(if you know where that is).

I don't know where that is, but that's okay 'cause what I meant was: did you catch her, buy her from a pet store, or a breeder, or what? I don't recall seeing any of those guys in a pet shop lately.

Sure is a cute little thing

I caught her, I think she looks a lot like a gerbil.

Lovely colouring. BIG feet!

Did you buy her or find her in Oregon?

Do they bite as hard as squirrels, or do has that girl bitten you. It looks very content sitting on your hand. I always thought those things were cute.

No it hasn't bitten me just chewed holes in my shirt when I wasn't looking, It is very tame. Once I found a vole that was tame like this too. If you don't know what a vole looks like, it looks a lot like a hamster. Voles are very abundent in my area and I useully use them for snake food because there are so many. This was my first time finding Kangaroo rats, It must have been the habitat.

I have no idea what's going on. It's more fun that way.

I caught her in South central Oregon, but their range is most of the western desert part of the U.S. I know in pet shops they sell gerbils, which I think is a relative. They have the same exact body but they are different colors.

Good luck,

Hi,
This may sound mean. Since they are nocturnal their eyes are very sensitive to light. I found them on old dirt roads. So when I saw one in the headlights. I have a 6 million candle power flash light. So when I saw one it would freeze in the headlihts(like a deer), I would jump out with the flash light and shine it on them, temperarily blinding them I would run and grab them. I also have some box traps but was afraid to use them because in the night the metal gets really cold and can kill small animals. so unless you check them often its not worth it.
