Feeding question--please respond.

althea Oct 19, 2005 11:50 PM

I am curious, and hoping that you folks will share some info. What, how much, and how often do you feed an adult bci in the
7-8 ft. range? My male consumes two 350-450 g. rats every 12-14 days. My female consumes 3-4 rats of the same size, in the same time period, and would gladly eat more. While he seems a bit thin to me, perhaps it is just that she is just overly plump. Thanks in advance for any and all input.

regards,
althea

Same here. My girl will eat as much as I'm willing to defrost (small rabbit or 2 jumbo rats). My male is content with one large rat. I'll be lucky to get my male to eat at all during winter as his mind is obviously focused on other things.

They are both 5 1/2 years old and the female dwarfs him, particularly in girth.

that is a big boy. I. personally, don't let my males get that big. I prefer my breeders between 4-5.5 feet, tops 6'. My breeder males get one medium rat every 3 weeks, occationally every 2 weeks, but that is not the rule of thumb. That's all they will ever get. They hold their weight well, but don't get huge. My 7-8 foot female only get one large/jumbo rat per week (equals out to two every two weeks). But, again, I don't want her to be 10 feet or more and 60 pounds. If you want them to maintain their current size, I'd cut their rations in half. If you want them to be monster huge, that is a different matter.

My female is 9 years old, and my male is seven. He is about the same size as when I got him as an adult two years ago. I was planning on cutting my female back, but wanted some advice before I did. She has always been an enthusiastic eater, and I don't have much to compare her to.

Thanks again!
