Plexiglass; why not?

johnavilla Oct 20, 2005 08:53 AM

OK, so I'm planning on building an enclosure and I am wondering if there is any reason that I should not use plexiglass. Can I affix heat tape to it or will that cause fumes? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Plexiglass and other brands of acrylic can offgass, warp, and yellow when exposed to high heat. You can still use it for an enclosure but I'd avoid flexwatt or other types of heat tape.

A quality radiant heat panel does a much better job of heating the entire enclosure without having the extreme localized heat of flexwatt. It's the only heat source I would use in an all acrylic cage.

It would be easier to just have part of the cage plexiglass and the rest wood, or have the bottom wood and frames for the plexi-glass out of wood as well.

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll just build a wooden rack. It will be more usefull in the long run. I've only got two snakes right now but I plan on adding to that this summer.
