Hi All I was just wondering why Galapagos tortoises are not available in Europe. We do get I limited number of Aldabra’s but no Galapagos, there’s not that many in zoos in Europe .and I don’t think there are any in UK zoos or parks. I was just wondering if any one knows why.

Hi. A few people here in the US breed Galapagos Tortoises, but the species is virtually impossible to ship out of this country for the following reason: Galapagos tortoises are an endangered species and are listed as CITES I. In order to obtain an export permit (or an import permit for that matter), one must prove that such export (or import) would be beneficial to the species in the wild, and would have to provide solid scientific proof of same. Captive breeding by private individuals does not qualify as benefitting the species in the wild and is not a valid reason for export or import. Hence, if there are no Galapagos Tortoises already in the UK, you probably will not see any there (at least legally) in the near future.

Thanks for your reply Zovick
there are most things in Europe like Radiated Tortoise which are a lot cheaper than in the US .we do see Aldabras from time to time .but not that often. We visit Florida every two years and I love to see the Aldabras at bush gardens and the two at gatorland .but I have never see a Galapagos up close .we did see a small one at tamper expo about four years ago but it was in a glass viv and off display. we are visiting next October and I am hoping to see a Galapagos then.
Does anyone no if Richard Cary Paull still has his display at Robert is here???? I have all his books and have see some photos of his animals they look nice. I am all so hopping to see some in Europe this year as I have been tolled that Frankfurt zoo has some.
