Leopard Tortiose growth

kjvh25 Oct 20, 2005 09:17 AM

I have had my Leopard toriose for 3 months now and it hasn't grown very much since I bought it, only about 6mm (less than half an inch)and about 2 grams. It eats often, drinks well, and goes to the bathroom regularly. I provide it with uva/uvb lighting and an adequate thermal gradient(75-95 degrees from cool side to hot side)and it has plenty of room for a young tortise (enclousure = 4ft x 6ft). Deit consists of clover, weeds, and various store bought greens. What kind of growth can I expect for a typical leopard tortoise? Does this seem like enough growth in 3 months? Maybe I am just too anxious to see it get big.

you can expect about 1.5 inches per year the first several years. However, it often takes a few weeks for a new tort to get established, so don't be concerned unless many months go by without some good growth.

I have had a leopard for just over two years - my first. I have also found very little info on leopard growth. I have never heard that you can expect 1.5 inches a year, but it sounds about right. I know with mine the growth was very inconsistant in the first year. After having her for a few weeks I bought a digital food scale that measures in 1/10th ounces up to 5 pounds. Once a week a weigh her and track it on a graph. I have a very acurate record after two years that might prove useful or interesting to others at some point. last fall I got a second leopard - 5 years old - and have been tracking his weight as well. Strange thing is this one has not grown a lick since I got him.

Good luck, Ben
