Hurricane/Emergeny cage advice

zdoc Oct 20, 2005 09:49 AM

Well it looks like hurricane Wilma is coming straight for my house and my family and I may be leaving(driving somewhere north). So any way what is your advice on a travel cage for a bearded dragon. She is full grown at about 16inches with a tail nip. What is your advice on a cage that have enough space for her. I have plenty of space in the car and also electricity although I dont think she will need heat but who knows how long we will leave for. Do you guys reccomend those plastic pet carriers for lizards with the vent and door on top or something else. Also for food she will just have to deal with veggies and possibly freeze dried insects or something like that. Thanks guys

I had a friend who kept dozens of bearded dragons in large cardboard boxes (open topped). He set them up as temporary and stuck with it. He just clamped heat lamps to the sides and put packing tape around the top rim so the crickets could not escape.

I thought he was crazy due to the fire hazzard but it worked for a very long time. I would do the same thing on a temporary basis.

Good luck getting away from this storm. And hurry...

I realize you've likely already evacuated, but for future reference, for travel I just put my beardie in a Rubbermaid with holes drilled in the sides and paper towels or newspapers. I used a box large enough so he could sit in it without curving his tail, but no larger. For temporary housing you could do cardboard or a larger Rubbermaid. I really hope you and your family are safely out of the hurricane's path. Good luck.
