Very Sad morning here at my place.......

ajfreptiles Oct 20, 2005 09:55 AM

I awoke this morning to a very sad sight. My pregnant Anery female who was due to deliver on Nov. 27th 2005 had passed away.

She has been showing signs of discomfort, that I assumed was signs of just being overly full of babies....which I did not really think was all that bad. Laying on sides alot.

She was a very healthy boa, I had never suspected anything to be wrong with her at all.

The way I found her...and what I had been observing leads me to believe she was having trouble breathing, or maybe had a seizure ??? really I do not know.

I opened her up and everything appears to look healthy to me except the lungs look too white...??? What I mean is they do not have that pink look when filled with Oxygen, as I have seen in other animals. That also leads me to believe trouble breathing or suffacation.

Her neck was laying twisted when I found her....maybe seizure? I do not know.

I will post pictures, but they would have to be under a graphic heading so others can pass by them.

It appears that there were 27 or 28 total egg sacks, 17 of which were babies.

I realize that when we are breeding any animals, there are going to be some painfull and sad experiences. Hopefully I can learn some things from this and others as well.

I can hope this is the last I will ever see this, but reality says probably not. Take care all.

Sorry to hear the bad news. I was looking forward to seeing some babies from her. Wishing you good health with your other boas and healthy litters.

Things like that terrify me every breeding season. Right now I only have 6 breedable females this year, the loss of any one of them would be devistating to me. I can not afford to replace them. My heart goes out to you. Best of wishes for the rest of the season.

I am very sorry to hear this as well, Andy.
I had some difficult events in my breeding room last year, and this spring, not all with Boas, but.. yeah that's rough.
Take care.
