First time shedding

JohnnyRed Oct 20, 2005 03:43 PM

My lil guy, now have him for around 2 months has begun his first shedding cycle. Took him for the bath today and his top and right side of his head is lightish white / grey and it is starting to peel slightly.

Is there anything special I should do for him? I bathe him usually every other (if not every) day. I also spray mist his cage down at least 3-5 times daily. The humidity in the room runs around 55-60 normally without my mistings, his cage runs higher (75-80)with them.

As usual thanks for the advice, this site is an invalueable resource when dealing with an ornery lil exotic.

Hey, you are doing a really good job. It should shed just fine.

You're doing fine.
For hard to shed parts, a soft children toothbrush (the softest you can find) can be helpful. During bath-times, gently brush along the scales (from head to tail, not reverse, or he won't like it very much!) to get some pieces of skin to come off or loosen up.

This can also be practiced even when not shedding, as it can get rid of some dirt or debris, and get the animal used to brushing when needed. Stay away from the vent area of course, and the belly.

I use Mineral Oil sometimes, especially on the finger tips and tip of the tail and it helps A LOT!
