TOMATO FROG NOT EATING

noodletuesday Oct 20, 2005 07:02 PM

my boyfriend works in a pet store and ofter gives me animals that arent doing good so i can get them fattened back up and stuff. so he gave me a 2 and a quarter inch tomato frog. he used to hand feed from my boyfriend. he said he stopped hand feeding but kept eating then quit eating altogether. so now i have him, i changed his substrate from forest bedding (eco earth) to just moss. i also added a water dish (he didnt have one in there before). i have so far tried crickets in the cage and off tongs, superworms on tongs, tuffies, sm and lg comets off tongs and a thawed pinkie rat off a tong and i also left it in his cage for about 2 hours. i changed his substrate and decied id leave him completely alone for 2 days then try to feed him quietly at night. i put a little water dish over a heat pad to keep the humidity high while i let him chill. does anyone have any other ides, its hard for me to get live pinkie mice if thats what you were going to say. please help i really care for this little guy and id love to see him live. im thinking of de worming him just in case but i know that this is dangerous unless you know for sure it has parasites. i dont know whether he was CB or WC.

i would keep him on wet paper towels, at least for now if not in general. it has effectively no risk of impaction, which he could have, it is easy to burrow into if he wants, and it is easy to clean and tell when it needs to be cleaned. sometimes if they wont eat on their own, rubbing whatever the food is along their mouth, back and forth, may cause them to bite at it at which point they will realize it is good. that has worked with pacmans for me.

Good point with the paper towels. They were often my choice substrate.

If the frog is holding its weight, I would not go about stressing it with shoving food into its mouth or rubbing it on its lips and such. I would just leave it be, make sure it has plenty of water, and the temperature is right.

How long has it gone without feeding?

If the frog is still holding its weight fairly well, I don't see it as an issue. I had frogs go off feed for months at a time, then randomly start again.
