Fogging devices

micky-kennie Jul 21, 2003 12:57 PM

Has anyone used a fogging device in their chameleon's cage? I was thinking of getting one to put in my repti rapids waterfall and I was wondering if it helps the humidity levels in an all screen cage and for how long the humidity lasts. My cage is 5 feet tall, 2 feet wide and 1foot 8 inches deep. I can reposition the waterfall to within a foot of the top of the cage if this will help the humidity. (it is currently about half way up) Any advice is apreciated.

I wouldn't suggest using a waterfall. They may look nice but can harbor bacteria and the chameleon is unlikely to use it. If he does who knows what germs are in the crevices. Why not use a cool mist humidifier. Vicks brand is available at Wal Mart, Target, and many other places for about 29.00. It will provide humidity and also drinking water when it builds up on the leaves.
I use that and hand mist 2-3 times a day..

cool mist humidifiers work great and can be put on a timer-you can purchase one for cheap at thrift stores-worked great for my jackson's-good luck

A humidifier that will create a visible mist is usually called an ultrasonic humidifier and it is the same technology as a fogging device. Be aware that it won't necessarily create enough vapor to condense on leaves (depends on a lot of other things so you should plan on spraying for direct drinking), but it will raise the air humidity really well. Cycle the humidifier on a lamp timer to maintain the humidity level you need.
