Selling US Critters Overseas

TedNelson Jul 21, 2003 01:09 PM

Greetings! I'm an avid collector in So. Cal. To date, I've just camped and hung out in the desert checking out various herps and collecting a few native species for my own collection. However, it recently dawned on me that there could be a market for some of our more interesting reptiles overseas. We buy theirs, do they buy ours? I know the Japanes love buying American stuff.

Anyway, does anyone know how I would go about getting into the collecting / exporting / selling biz.

I'm not trying to get rich, just trying to finance my own herp interests. I'd love to team up with another collector if anyone is interested.

Also, if anyone knows the ins and outs of the laws I might run up against, I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks,
Ted (aka Turtle Ted)

I don't know about the legality of any of it, but think about the economics of it. Corns and kings and pits are purpotedly almost as commonly kept in Europe as they are here. They've got thier own breeders, and most of our natives aren't hugely expensive over there, which would make the shipping prohibitive. If you could work out a legal way to ship some rarer natives over there, there'd be money it maybe, but that'd be difficult to get through the paperwork. There's also the problem of the limited market; the EU's population isn't huge after all.

Sorry to deliver bad news
Paul
