I was using dried out eco earth, but i tended to get too humid any way under the water bowls and my westerns got a minor case of scale rot on their bellies.
I teated them with iodine dilute and switched over to aspen and i have had no other problems. Actually, i sue aspen for all of my snakes except for my blood now (who is still on eco earth and sphagnum moss). The aspen is easy to burrow through (it tends to hold its shape) and its easy to spot clean!

I actually just tried pelletized pine saw dust. What I did was wet it a little, then let it dry so that it breaks up. The hogs have loved it (it's on one half of the tank). They burrow through it and leave tunnels behind. Since I do not complete wet it to break it all down it is super absorbant. I have been trying this stuff for about 3 weeks now with no probs. I will keep you all informed if I find out otherwise.
