Possible Build

Codynolen Oct 21, 2005 12:14 AM

I am thinking about building a tank for my RES. Either a 50 - 100 gal. My res only need a 50..

I wanted to know if there is soem way to implement a drain I can hook a water hose to? I hate making water changes... x_x

I was going to make three side wood and the front acrlyc.

I will use the filter I already have, a FLuval 404.

Should i just buy a 50 gal all glass aquarium?

you were going to water proof the wood, right? why do you say your res only needs 50 gallons? females need at least a 75 since they get to be a foot. a male stays smaller so only needs about a 50 or 55, so yours is a male? i would go ahead and buy an appropriately sized aquarium. you will know it is built right and they look really good. acrylic scratched really easily and i dont even like it for aquariums, so an animal that could scratch it would be even worse. if the glass on an aquarium isnt tempered you can get it drilled and you can install a drain and add on valves if you want. it is easier though to just use a python brand aquarium vacuum. you do have a lot of filtration on the tank right, you dont just change the water do you?

The fluval has been running only trhee days.

I useto weekly have to do nearly complete water changes..not any more.

I just been aasuming it's a male. This december I will have had the turtle for a year. Hasn't grown any. Still 5 inch. carpace.

I am having trouble finding a vet that handles reptiles in my area. I think they all will be a considerable ways away. ugh..

hello if i were you i would use your fluval, get a longer hose and put the out hose either in a bucket or put the out hose drain in a sink or outside via a longer hose. that is what i do .my setup is a 75 gal with a fluval 404,104,303with waterfal and thats how i drain my tank let the filter do the work. you have a excelent filter with the 404 good luck

What you're thinking of doing is possible if you used marine plywood, but for such a relatively small setup theres not much point. Buy a glass tank instead. I'd recommend a minimum of 100 gallons unless you're positive it's a male AND you don't ever anticipate putting another turtle in the tank with the first.

You might want to consider one of these.

You can get them with a drain already built in. Also there are tanks which have the bottoms predrilled for a bulkhead fitting.
