They have a very nice tortoise enclosure at the Miami zoo, with aldabras and galapagos. You can get REAL close to them too, they are only seperated by a wooden fence. i took some great pics when I was there last year. Email me if you wanna see them

All of the the tortoises at Robert is Here including, the old timer 'Centurion', are now gone. The owner of them (Dick Paull) sold off the collection and they were all removed last year.
Also, Robert is Here is closed for the months of October and even November each year.

What is 'Robert is Here'? I thought I was reading really bad grammar.

Robert is Here is a very cool vegetable/fruit stand that grew into a minor tourist attraction in Florida City. It is right on the road to the Everglades National Park and only a mile or so West of U.S. Highway 1 at the gateway to the Florida Keys.
It got the name from when Robert's mother had a fruit stand at that same location years ago in the 60s. She would go into town but leave young Robert there to manage her little fruit stand. But since Robert was just a kid, many folks wouldn't see him sitting there behind the counter. So his mom made a sign for when she was gone and Robert was in charge that read "Robert is here". That is how it got the name.
Over the years it grew and now has all kinds of locally grown exotic fruits and vegetables as well as imported stuff. Robert (a multi generation Florida Native, like me) also added some oddball animals to add to the tourist appeal. Some years ago Dick Paull hooked up with him and worked out a deal where Dick could keep his sizeable tortoise collection there for the tourists in exchange for free room and board for the tortoises.
Dick had several Galapagos animals including 'Centurion' who was (still is) a Townsend Expedition original. There where numerous gigantic sulcatas, many redfoots and yellowfoots and a bunch of iguanas. I think there was some Indian Ocean giants too at one time.
BTW....Robert is Here is famous for their many tropical fruit milkshakes that trust me, are UNBELIEVABLY GOOD!

I totally agree, their milkshakes are to die for!!

Carl, I forgot to say...

Thanks very much for the history. I love that kind of stuff.
