Albino Leopard Gecko Not Eating!!!!!!

bmills May 18, 2003 11:53 AM

I have an albino leopard gecko who has not eating in a week. It does not have the v-shaped row of opennings between the hind legs so I am pretty sure it is a female. She seems active at night and her tail is still very plump. We do not have any sand in her tank so she could not have eating any and gotten impacted. She seems fine except she hasn't eaten in a week. I am worried about her and need help. PLEASE GIVE ME ADVICE. I really appreciate it, thanks.

First, calm down. If she looks healthy and is behaving normally then she probably has just gotten tired of eating (that sometimes happens with leos). Like people, some leos get tired of eating the same thing over and over. If you normally feed crickets, try mealies or vice versa. If you are still unsure, make sure her temperatures are correct (mid to upper 80s on the warm side, room temp on the cool side) and make sure she has plenty of good hides (a humid hide on the warm end and a dry hide or two in other parts of the tank). Make sure the tank is not overcrowded and that she has fresh water available. If everything is fine, then she will start eating eventually. Good luck!!!

I appreciate you answering. I have her in a 10 gallon tank so I'm not sure how to get a warm and a cool side. I have a dry hide for her and a water dish and a net for her to crawl on. I do not have a humid hide and was curious as to how to make one. I normally feed her crickets so I will give her more time and if she doesn't start eating i will switch her food. Thanks again for helping out.

So, you arent heating her at all??? You have to have a under tank heater or heat lamp otherwise she will not be able to digest properly and will just be cold. A humid hide could just be a cool whip or butter containers(cleaned out) with wet paper towels in it.

I do have a heat lamp for her. It is 75-80 during the night and 82-90 during the day. I am heating her as I was told by the pet store. I just wanted to make sure that the 10 gallon tank was good enough. I was told that for one leopard gecko you need a 10 gallon tank.

She sleeps most of the day, because they are nocternal, and at night she is active and I can get her out and she seems fine. Her tail is very plump and she seems healthy, she just hasn't eaten for a week. I was getting worried about her. I appreciate the help.

with the others, if her tail is plump and shes not losing any weight than shes ok. they get bored with food so see if you can get her a different food than wat u r feeding now. just keep offering a variety of foods and she should see something she likes

Thanks for your help. I will get her something different besides crickets and see if she will eat it. Thanks again.

a better purchase instead of switching food would be to spend a whole 20 dollars (12 on lamp 4-8 on bulb) and get her a heat lamp, or under tank heater. THey must have some sort of heat to digest food this is most likely your problem.

bmills May 18, 2003 12:34 PM

I do have a heat lamp for her. It gets between 82-90 degrees during the day and at night when I turn it off it is 75-80 degrees. I do have a heat lamp for her though. I have the lamp on for 12 hours, and off for 12 hours. Let me know if I need to do more. I appreciate your help. Thanks.

82 during the day is a little low, but you dont want it to get more than 90. if you can, i recomend an UTH, they like the belly heat, and i think it raises the air temp a little.

The temp is normally around 88 degrees. I am going to make her a humid hide because she does not have one right now. Hopefully she will start to eat sometime soon...I love her to death and would hate to lose her. I appreciate the help, thanks.

he said he had a heat lamp, but i agree if you dont then the food isnt the problem. srry,

Yes, I do have a heat lamp, so I don't think that is the problem. thanks.

A ten gallon tank is fine for one leo. Leos however prefer ground heat and if you can get a small reptile heat pad for 10 gallon tanks and attach it to a rheostat the leo would thank you for it. Read the directions carefully. The pad should only go over half the area of the tank and keep the rheostat on low or medium. Then, just get a lower watt bulb for the heat lamp and put it over the same side the heat pad is on. My humid hide is made from a coolwhip container with a door cut into it. Put some wet paper towels inside it, and put it over the heat pad. The water dish should be on the cool side of the tank as well as a small dry hide. Hope this helps!!!

That does help, thank you very much. I will make a humid hide and put it in the tank for her. I appreciate the help and hopefully she will start to eat soon.
