Snout Damage

danielp Oct 21, 2005 04:39 PM

Hey all.. I went to this girl´s house yesterday to check her ig cuz she asked me to go there and see if everything was alright.. well.. she has this beautiful adult male ig. Everything was fine.. food, lights. enclouser.. and she asked me if his snout (damaged due to wire mesh enclouser) would ever heal, and I said that it should heal with time but I wasn´t sure.. Does it heal?? I never had this problem with my igs so I have no idea if it does or doesn´t.. But it should right?? I mean.. with shedding and everything..
And I was wondering if it´s breeding season in the US.. I´m in Brazil and it´s spring here.. Chico is going CRAZY!! And it is just the beginnig... Oh man.. .. anyways.. is it??
Later,
Dan

It will heal if it is kept clean and medicated everyday, as well as if the enclosure is kept clean.

The wire mesh is less damaging if it is rubber/plastic coated, and if it large enough. When enclosures are cramped, the animal become restless.

Breeding season won't help, because the animals go crazy and are more prone at hurting others and themselves.

The snout will heal if medicated. If left untreated, it will stay that way, or get worse.

Thanks Joe! And BTW what kind of medication should I tell her to use?
And is it breeding season there?

Something like Neosporin, or any antibiotic ointment should do fine. There's a chance the animal will lick some of it off, so don't put too much of it at a time.

If it's spring, it's breeding season.

If it doesnt heal within one month with Neosporin its better to take the ig to a vet.If the wound is infected the bacteria may go to the throat and to the lungs.Ive seen that happen.A simple bruise on the snout became a serious respiratory infection.
