thanks for looKING!

.

What the heck kind of snake is that? Look like a tree snake I got from Thailand when I was a kid.
That is a Costa Rican Bird Snake(Pseustes poecilonotus)sorry, not a king or even a hybrid, lol!
That's a pretty good looKING snake, Jetzen. I love how the light reflects the myriad of colors on it's ventrals.

Thanks Todd, your's has about the best contrast that i ever seen in a splendida.
Todd, that's so nicely contrasting it makes me wonder if it is from captive breeding or possibly a cross of snakes from different areas. Most w/c I've seen are nowhere that nice. I have thought it was w/c in the past. Whatever, it should produce some knockouts. Thanks...TC
That snake is a true splendida caught by Todd and myself from the heart of splendida range in west texas, a montane locality above 4000'. I've got a pair and Todd has that lone male. It's a new project for me and I took Todd along for the ride so he get's to share in it.

It's always good to have another knowledgable herper along when you collect to back up your find. That snake was Joe's spot and he already had what he came for so I got the "kill"! It is a lighter phase and was interesting enough to collect and I hope to gather a locale specific female To pair with him this spring. It is what it is on the photos and is munching hoppers and small mice like there's no tomorrow. I like some of the morphs out there, but don't plan on breeding anything but locality snakes. It was an awesome trip and I learned a ton from Joe. Thanks for the backup, Forky!

And for all intents and purposes Terry, I am a field herper first and foremost. I don't have access to any kings other than splendies, holbrooki, nigritas, and recently cal kings. Only my splendida are of age and just this spring will they breed for the first time. Only my Thayeri, cal kings, and nigritas are store bought. All of my splendidas and holbrooki are w.c. from Texas. I want to breed true to locale, not make morphs at this time, but......?
Todd Hughes
I've been stuck in n. MI for almost 19 yrs, Todd, and have been trying to make the most of it, studying the literature and the few herps here, and researching my ratsnakes and maintenance. I'm anxious to get to a climate more suitable for field work. After all, with the ground frozen for a good five months and most of that time covered in snow, there's a short season for herping activity here. Can't wait to be herping all year and not having to go to work all the time. Since I've been going to AZ I've been getting a little used to it and I like it
Herping with you and Forky in w. TX would be awesome. I remember seeing some pix of his property out there. Maybe someday.
Here's another G. V. king that has a lot of black. I like it, but it's not as contrasty as yours. I think I like yours even better...haha.
TC

Terry, I just "rescued" one similar to that from the local pet store. It is lighter but with the same pattern as the one Frank posted from the restaurant porch. It is supposed to be from Arizona. Yours is a great dark snake. I love variability! I'll get some more pics up.
Todd Hughes
that was a pretty good night for the first week of October at over 4000' (but don't tell anyone that the snakes are still moving up there
.
I plan on going back next spring. I could use a total of 2.3 from that area, then I've already got the next locale picked out.
Forky
She's doin' great, has shed, eaten, and has settled in. All have fed twice, the king thrice, and shed. Great snakes and I hope to secure a female from there also. I have a hankering for Chinese!
Todd Hughes
Thanks, Joe.
I look forward to seeing how your project goes. Todd's snake is beautiful and I imagine yours look a lot like that. I wish ya the best of luck on that project and can only hope mine look half as good someday
Terry
Joe, 4,000 ft., that's pretty high. I'm not sure I've seen any from that elevation before. Do you happen to have any pics of yours you could post..hint, hint??
PS: Is the habitat montane or more flatland?
TC
From my backyard in Green Valley....

It's a grassland in a mountain basin. I won't be posting any more photos here but I'll be happy to e-mail you some (I still need to photograph them). It's absolutely beautiful habitat and I'll be happy to share it with you in an e-mail. It's NOT a big secret, I just prefer not to post the habitat info on an open Web forum.
When you get out to AZ full time we can even take a little time and visit the habitat together.
Best
Joe
....something I really haven't gotten into yet. Maybe one day when the holbrooki wear off.
Matt, I hope The holbrooki never wear off! Throw another pic of the checkerboards....pleeeeeze! How's it doin'? I want some, LOL!
Todd Hughes

...the checkerboard is doing great. She's currently going through a shed cycle, and I will post pics as soon as she sheds.
Or maybe I'll just let John post pics of her, in hand of course.
Wear off? I don't think so, you know you'll be a die hard holbrooki lover till the day you die,lol
i got a nice one this year at the eths expo i love them black/sock heads
,,,,,,,thomas
old pic get some new ones up soon
I don't think splendida sock-heads get much better than that.
remember this little guy?
That's a purdy snake, man!
Todd hughes
