Need help in selecting new cham

kaveman Oct 21, 2005 08:38 PM

Hello everyone. A reptile convention is coming up in San Jose, California where I plan to buy a new cham for my mother. We are not new to keeping them, we have kept veilds who are a hardy species but somewhat short lived. However, we are not "experts." We have bred veilds and have kept them for very long. I think our home is very good for chams because of the temps we get outside, a quiet home, and indoor plants and trees by our windows.

Can people here recommend a chameleon that is both hardy and long lived? Everyone feel free to add anything you want. All recommend species will be greatly researched by me untill I have narrowed it down to maybe 3 choices, then see what they have at the show and pick from those 3.

Thank you for your time and help.

Veilds properly cared for ARE hardy and can be very long living creatures. So if you think that your veilds are living short-lived lives..? maybe that is something to take into factor.

As for plants near windows, the window blocks all UV Rays, AND intensifies the heat. They can actually get a sunburn fron glass filterd light.

Take a look at Panther Chameleons.

Yes I know that about glass. I don't know how you took me for an idiot but I know about Veileds. No offense, not trying to be a jerk but your post kind of took me by surprise. Like I said, we have bred them successfully but now I'm looking into a new species of cham that is a hardy species as well.

And by short lived, ya I guess they live somewhat long life spans. We have kept our chams for quite a few years. The males usually lived for over 8 years and the females a little less.

And when I said we have trees by the windows, we dont leave the windo closed. We open the window (don't worry theres a screen) for the sunlight. Please don't assume I'm an idiot and make comments that are untrue.

Now if you did not assume I was clueless or an idiot, I really apologize. I may have read it wrong and perhaps you were concerned and thought I was keeping my chams wrong because I wasn't so descriptive.

Now the thing is we do take great care of our chams and I'm looking for a cham that is hardy and with a longer lifespan. I'll check into panthers like what you mentioned. Thanks.

Yes, soory, the lack of description didn't really sit well with me and I didn't mean to come pff as harsh or condescending if I did. The internet is not an easy way to talk, so no hard feelings.

Any ways, 8 years is a good long hardy life, and should be be called hort lived. Just think about all those store bought veilds that only live a couple years from uneducated owners. I think that some of the larger chameleons live pretty long but im not positive.

You will defenetly enjoy panthers! Many colour locals to choose from.

Hey,

I believe the cham that lives the longest is a parsons. But don't get any ideas... They are one of the most difficult species to maintain in captivity and and they cost thousands...

Yes, I would go with veileds or panthers. Both are hardy, and livee quite long. 8 years for a cham is very long. I would suppose that it is 90 something in human years. Panthers, in my opinion, have the best colors of any chameleon, and you can choose whatever color variation that you want. What else can you ask for?!?!
