I wanna Build my own cage. HELP

bigmansm Oct 21, 2005 11:10 PM

What is a good size? I will initally have one chameleon but get at least one more to have a toally of two.

Is it safe to have 2 or 3 in one cage?
Can i have different breeds of chameleons in the same cage? asuming the same habitat would be okay

Do i want a full cage or should i have glass on 4 sides with a wire top?

Hey,

First of all, only ONE chameleon can be kept per cage. The are solitary creatures which prefer to live in social isolation, outside of breeding attemps.

As for the cage size, it depends on the size and species of the chameleon. There are plenty of places to research proper cage sizes and cage designs on the internet.

The cage should be ALL SCREEN, with no glass what so ever. Glass will just be a perfect breeding spot for bacteria. Use aluminum insect screening(NO fiberlass screening). For the frame, usually standard pressure treated pine works well; we use 2X2's. For the bottom of the cage be sure to use some sort of plastic sheeting, i.e. ployethylene, polystyrene, or pvc sheeting. If you have any other questions be sure to ask.

Personally, I think you are getting ahead of yourself. You don't seem to know much about chameleons. Research and then own one before you decide to build your own cage.

What do you mean "own one before you build your own cage"?

That was just a suggestion. Owning a cage a cage before you build one will let you figure out, first hand what changes you should incorperate into the one you design and build.

But it also doesn't sound like this person has owned chameleons before.

OH, now I understand. Yes, you have a point there.

You might want to consider buying a commercial cage first. Reptariums have their positive and negative features. Building a cage will still probably not come out cheaper than a reptarium, however, you can incorporate better custom features. But you BETTER research alot more first before you decide anything.
