prices for a new morph?

Marco-M Oct 22, 2005 07:53 AM

hi,
i have breed my male leopardgecko to some normal females, the babys was all normal wild looking, now i have breed back this possible hets to the father and have received also leopardgeckos like the father is.
now my question, could a price from 2200 for 1.1 het for a new morph be o.k or not?
i dont want post pictures at this time,i will post all next year, first i will think about a name and about a realistic market price.
i can only say this morph is simple recesiv and not on the market today!he is also not a cross to any morphs on the market, this is a own line, produce from a wildcaught male-not from a cb born leopardgecko.
it has nothing to do with albinos, hypos, snow or others...
i hope some people understand that i dont want post pictures now.
i thank for every help to find a normal market price.

Yes, depending on the morph. As long as its something bold , not just a different color toe. From what I noticed new morphs are going for about $1000 to $1500 each. Email me and I will tell you a good strategy to use your first season.

Your price will have to be adjusted by the market. You can ask for any price you want, but what you will actually get will be decided by the market. Simple supply and demand. If you truly have the control over a small supply and there is a high demand, then you could expect to get MAYBE $1000-$1500 as suggested ...but I wouldn't hold my breath. You would have to something that has never been seen before. The mack snow's came out for 1k - 1.5k and that morph is co-dom.
Good luck with your new gecko, get some pics up so we can get a looksey!

Tangerine Tornados, Aptor, Raptor, Hybino, Sunglow, Albino Tangerine Carrot-Head, Mack Snow, all were in the $1000 to $1500 price range. Like I said before it would have to be one of a kind. I don't know if you have any breeding experience but don't show anyone until you are ready to sell your offspring. You will control the market longer if you catch the other breeders off guard. I have one more tip I will share with you if you email me. I'm not trying to get in on this but I don't want to see someone get taken advatage of. I do this as a hobby and I don't like how some people are cut throat.

sure,a mack snow is real nice and co-dominant,but here i think snows was also on the market before.
by my project is this a complete new kind of leo morph, first i will only offer the hets,1 year after than also the visibles.
here now i think about the prices for the het's.
i bring the pictures from my leopards in the next 3-4 months to the public and than i still hope the people like my leos.
in the first year i will offer around 30-50 pairs from the het,i think this is enough.
this pairs i will split for the european market and the american market.
sure i can produce a lot more from the hets but i dont think that this is good for the market...
i thank you for the answers.

All of the morphs listed were from long established breeders, those prices have now adjusted to the market. The snows that were already on the market were not co-dom but line bred (really they were closer to pastels not snows). As far as this business being "cut throat" only SOME aspects (and people) are deceptive. If this guy really has a new morph, then he doesn't have much to worry about by posting pics, he has the genes in his collection and no one else does, unless it is a cross of some things we already have. I would love to see something that is new and not just a "re-mix" of what we already have.
Once again, price will be determined by the market.

These are all just opinions so don't get to excited. I agree with you on the prices. I wouldn't pay much for a het coming overseas from an unknown breeder. They would have to show the trait and even then I don't know about the risk of shiping. Now as far as the cut throat aspect, are you kidding? Put something knew out and next year there will be twenty other breeders with the same animal. Its part of the game. If someone gets a glimpse of what you got and there is anyway to breed for it they will be all over it. Personally if you dont want to flood the market sell females because you can't do as much with a female as a male. A male will produce more offspring obviously than a female.

I just re-read this post, you are saying you will be releasing 30-50 pairs from the het? Which means you are releasing POSSIBLE hets? You will not get $1000 -$1500 for possible hets, you won't even get that kind of money for hets. No one is going to pay that kind of money for hets unless there is something REALLY special AND there is a reputable name behind the geckos.

I just re-read this post too...where did you get a wild caught male? My understanding is that the countries in the middle east where leos inhabit are not exporting them. I'm guessing you are in Europe, but I am still interested in how long you have had this male and how you were able to get him. Most American breeders would love to be able to get some wild-caughts.

yes,i'm from europa.
here is it not a problem to get a wildcaught leopardgecko, many big wholesalers sale them but the most are in a very bad condition.
i post pictures but not yet, first i think about a name,a exact price and other things.
if you see the pictures in some months you will see that this is not a crossing or only words from me.
they are not possible hets,i have breed back all female hets back to the father and i have get also some leopardgeckos like the father looks.
but sure i will test this more.
in the first year i only sale het pairs,if i have enough from the visibels breed to some other geckos from me i will sale in the second year the first visibels.
here i think if i sale in the first year my visibel leo morphs,i can keep the most hets for myself and this is not what i want.
but sure, this are the points why i ask here some people if they can give me some informations for a realistic marketing plan by a simple new recesiv morph.

Marco-M Oct 22, 2005 11:53 AM

sure i have not a big name by geckos,i do this only for my hobby, but i think this change nothing that a new morph is a new morph.
for me is it not a big thing,if i can sale them i'm happy, but i dont let a new morph go for less or nothing...
maybe i cant sale some in america as european hobby breeder without a name but go in my situation, you have a nice new recesiv gecko... what are you doing now...
this are the things why i hope here to find help from people that have a idea.
what was the way from other recesiv geckos as they started to the market, have the big breeders also first sale only hets?
i realy thank everybody that bring me a little forward.

WindyO Oct 22, 2005 11:57 AM

Can you at least tell us if it is a color, pattern, or physical morph?

its a color pattern mutation.
i post the pictures in some months, than can everybody judge is this a new morph or not.
with my posting i dont want sale some here!i also dont want a deposit or other things,i only want serious informations what some breeders do if they have a new morph.
thats all.
i think about every answer and i thank all that spend some time to write me.

Gazz Oct 22, 2005 02:10 PM

So if you have back breed it prove that your male was not a one off fluke .But you have it the wrong way round it's the visuals for this morph you want to be selling not the hets keep the hets and get as meny visuals as you can.Breeder usually sell the visuals first hets later. To sell any thing you need a name your the owner of the morph your the one who should give it a name. For exsample-(Have you seen that new morph'no what morph is that'don't know it's a new morph ect)--(Have you seen them aptor morphs'yes they look so cool'i would't mine some of them ect) .As to the price at the end of the day they are only worth what someone willing to pay.Why can't you post any pictures ? it's not like we can print a picture out and use it for stud pictures would just be advertisement for you .

BlueLeo Oct 22, 2005 04:55 PM

What most breeders do is they keep the morph for a couple years and make its proven that you can get more offspring like that. It doesn't matter if you post pictures now or in a couple months, no one has the genetics to produce these geckos and if they do its not a new morph.
