byron.d Oct 22, 2005 07:54 PM

Here's my W/C male. I love the color and contrast on him, and I really dig the head on this guy!! I cant wait to get a big nasty girl for him next season.... I'll try to find one for me as well!!

The colors in the photo are true and accurate.

Thought you were talking about the Longhorns for a second. Beautiful Texas Rat. Love the grey on his head.

Good contrast on his pattern. He's got a nice glossy look to him. Did he just shed?

John

He did just shed, one week ago.

What kind of camera/lense did you use for that spider pic?

jfirneno Oct 23, 2005 04:40 PM

A friend of mine took this photo last week in Massachusetts with a Nikon digital SLR at night with an indirect light source. He asked me to get someone on the spider forum to id it (turns out it was a European Garden Spider). I happened to be answering this thread and figured since I had to put the pic in my photo gallery here to post it I might as well jazz up my reply with it. I'll find out what lens he used and send it to you soon.
Regards
John

Yes! Please do! I have a Nikon SLR (a D50 to be exact). I photograph alot of insects and other critters...up until now though, these are the best spider pics I've been able to get-

Kinda fun...but still not as in focus as I want them.

Allthough I do like this pic I got of my corn...I know, I know..this is a ratsnake forum...but hey...they're all family.

This friend of mine says his technique is to take a million shots while varying light and exposure time and position a little each time. Since I'm no kind of photographer and he has shown me some nice photos I can't argue with his methodology. I take the worst photos of some of the nicest snakes around so
my photos are almost a crime against nature.

I'll get any details on how he took that photo tomorrow at work.

I like your guttata pic. Real nice color on that snake.

Best regards
John

Here's a pic of a marbled spider shot on my property, in the woods. South East Va.

A fellow herper once told me how can we educate and expect other people to get over their fear of snakes, if we ourselves, can't get over a little spider.
Years ago,I didn't care for spiders and bugs as much as I do now, but after snakes, a favorite past time of mine is to hunt and photograph the many beautiful species of spiders & insects all around us. I don't always find snakes in the field to photograph, but you can be darn sure these little guys never disappoint.

When I find them in the back yard, I always subsidize them by putting insects in their webs. Adds a little beauty to the area.

I found one of those when I was in California last month, although we have them in Ohio as well.

I really dig him. I'm hoping to get a W/C female from the same area that he was collected from....

I was told that he was collected in the Houston area on the NASA property.
I’m hoping for a female from that same area.

I hope the Texas property is not like the Florida property because in Florida all of NASA's property is protected and illegal to collect from as far as I know. I think they are labeled WMAs. Check it out.

Killer snake though

I'm not sure of the legalities of collecting off of the base either. But a buddy of mine use to work on the NASA grounds near Clearlake and collected several Louisiana Milk Snakes off of the property. I'm assuming he would not have collected them had it not been ok for him to do so.

That is not too far from Nasa. It is still considered Clear Lake, and there are alot of snakes in some of those parks and neighborhoods near the nature center. A good place for lindy's also.
I have seen quite a few species in that one area. Coachwhips, copperheads galore, cottonmouths, ribbons, speckled kings, various natricines, etc.
Probably not legal to catch snakes on the nature center trails, but as I say there is alot of that same habitat in the surrounding neighborhoods and parks where it is legal.

As far as I know, the LBJ Space Center is considered a military reservation; therefore all wildlife receives the same blanket protection offered on any military installation. Military installations are for the most part no different than WMAs, as far as wildlife is concerned. Many offer traditional hunting and fishing, but anything else not provided for is off-limits, or otherwise a gray area. However, some installations don't allow any recreational use of wild areas or wildlife resources.
There's nothing really special about the LBJ Space Center property.
That's a good looking lindy. I think I'll be on the lookout for trash piles the next time I pass through that area.

That has to be one of the nicest WC lindy's I have ever seen. What locality is he?
