Got a new little one today

crittermom Oct 23, 2005 01:10 AM

I had seen this little fella (or maybe girl) in a pet shop about a week ago and took hubby there today to ..um...buy some supplies....yep thats it I NEEDED to get some aspen and stuff and I just HAD to let him see this cutie.....They had him advertised as an albino but he is defitely a creamsicle....and a fiesty one at that.....he bit me (or tried to LOL) about 5 or 6 times....the woman at the store told me she was about to feed him and asked to put the pinkie in the box with him. I thought what could it hurt I'd just dispose of the pinkie later (thinking that the snake would be too stressed to eat it). But that darn bugger snatched that pinkie right up.....so I brought him home and put him in his viv and there he will stay for a few days then I will start handling the little bugger....hopefully he will get used to me. It was so funny cause I was standing there talking to the pet shop lady and hubby was standing there watching this little snake try to rip my hand off and I couldn't even feel it! LOL I looked down and here this litte thing (about the size of a pencil) was trying its best to get a good grip and I was like....."what are you doing?"...."Maybe you'd like to try again cause I didn't feel it the 1st time!" and sure enough he tried to grab me again....Oh it was too cute but I don't want him to be that way too long! I just had to share....

Congrats on the new hatchling.
The little ones always have such great attitudes.
I do have a couple of questions, though.
How do you know it is definitely a creamsicle?
It wasn't listed as a creamsicle was it?
Is the store known for selling or producing creams, rootbeers or other mixes?
Do they have adult great plains rats, creamsicles or rootbeers?
It's hard to imediately identify a hatchling as a creamsicle just because it may have a little orange.

I agree with Jimmy. Most pet shops know what they are talking about (sometimes) But once I was able to convince the lady that a stripe was an amel. I would have saved $40 (rediculously overpriced) but I noticed a dead corn in the corner of the tank and about 4 regurged pinks that had been sitting for at least 3 days. They had 9 corns in a 10 gallon.... Won't shop there again!

Cool post pics when you can. My little one was also very nippy and still sometimes is, I dont care if he bites now and then because he's just acting natural. He will probably not grow out of it so Ive accepted it. I'm probably going to pick up another in a few months (can't have just one).

What makes you think it wont grow out of it?
How old is your snake?
The more you handle them and the older they get the more docile they become.
There are acceptions but I would be willing to bet it will calm down significantly as it grows.
A lot of people seem to think this will take a week or two.
It takes time. Usually more then a few weeks. Remember it takes more then a few weeks for a hatchling to grow large enough to feel secure.

Thanks draybar, I don't know maybe it will grow out of it but as soon as I see changes I'll presume it wont. I love corns but I dont think each one of them is alike though. But If you tell me it will then I'll go with what you say lol. Also I was taking pic's of him on the stairs in my house the other day and he was kinda vibrating his tail and backing up in the corner. I dont know if this snake was born thinking he was a western diamondback rattler or a dessert horned viper but its hilarious at how he thinks he can hurt someone and be fareless (Its entertaining).

Out of all the corns i have ever had or seen, all of them stopped biting and striking, accept for one, when i found a 4 1/2 foot okeetee in my front lawn yesterday and struggled to hold him. He striked and vibrated his tail a good amount. Also yesterday i was bitin from my 3 1/2 foot albino corn from a feeding mistake as i was stupid enough to stick my finger back in his feeding box to move the mouse and he smelled it and bit me it only stung a little, even with all the holes in my finger now, but he knew it was a mistake and let go. Yours will calm down give it time. A bite doesnt hurt that much.

My corn isn't very calm either. It can't even break my skin so I just don't care. I made that same mistake you were talking about with a 6 ft colombian. That, I cared about lol. My corn used to wiggle it's tail a lot but it doesn't do that anymore.

Tail vibrating is pretty common.
It seems a little more prevelant in my rats then corns but the hatchling corns will do it quite often.
It is quite entertaining isn't it?
You are right, not all snakes are the same but I would still be willing to bet that as time goes by you will begin to notice a change in the little "rattler".
