best uro sites for info?

lele Oct 23, 2005 03:33 PM

Hi all,

I have a young friend (11 y.o. boy) who is looking into his first lizard. We were at a show yesterday and he really wanted a bearide (I have one), but today is thinking a uro. Can you give me any pros or cons into why one might be better than the other? Of course, I know why bd's are good . I had looked inot a uro at one time and decided not to but frankly do not recall why!?

Also, can you direct me to some RELIABLE sites for him (and me) to research? He is planning on getting his herp next summer and he knows the importance of research. He knows my bd, my now deceased chameleon, my tarantulas and has me as a resource.

Oh, apparently a vendor told him that uro are stricly vegetarian - is this true? That is one of the more appealing aspects for him and his Mom! They don't really want to do the insect thing

Thanks, and I am sure he and/or I will be back asking questions.

I answered a few things on the chameleon forum, for ya since I have 2 uro's

Anyway, here is very good site, with a lot of info and lots of pictures of the different gorgeous uromastyx available.

They can certainly find alot of info in this link, that will help them.

Animal protein and Uros is a common discussion, but pretty much everyone agrees that as adults they should not eat MUCH animal protein, and can do quite well without any at all.

I had my mali uromaastyx for almost 10 years, and fed him crickets very rarely. I stopped altogether once I watched a group of them live in his cage, sit on his head, and generally wander right in front of him and get ZERO interest from him.

Their "mostly to entirely" vegetarianism is definitely one of the things that attracted me to the species!

Hi Eleizabeth, thanks for the info. Yes, the veggie thing is what both Matt and his Mom are attracted to, too!

Is 10 years typical?

While this site is ok, I think one of the most informed site there is would be www.deerfernfarm.com. Contains about anything you may need to know. No site is perfect but this one is close. www.urotopia.com is also another excellent site. Hope this helps

Lele,
We just saw Doug Dix (DeerFarm) at the Northwest herp show this past weekend, and he had some great mali babies, saharans and others. We recommend him to everyone thinking of getting uros...

We got our first uro pair from him and they are still going strong (3 years now).

Yes, you can actually maintain uros insect free - what a concept, eh? LOL

Have fun...
