uromastyx owners??

lele Oct 23, 2005 04:08 PM

Hi all,

For any of you who have, or have had, uros.

I have a young friend (11 y.o. boy) who is looking into his first lizard. We were at a show yesterday and he really wanted a bearide, but today is thinking a uro. Can you give me any pros or cons into why one might be better than the other? Of course, I know why bd's are good I had looked into a uro at one time and decided not to but frankly do not recall why!?

Also, can you direct me to some RELIABLE sites for him (and me) to research? He is planning on getting his herp next summer and he knows the importance of research. He knows/knew Darwin & Luna.

Oh, apparently a vendor told him that uro are stricly vegetarian - is this true? That is one of the more appealing aspects for him and his Mom! They don't really want to do the insect thing

I posted on Uro forum, but figured Iwould try here, too.

thanks!

One person you can contact is Robyn at Pro Exotics (he posts on the monitor forum). They just had some really nice looking uros hatch that they let incubate inside the enclosures. I'm sure he can help point you in the right direction (as well as many others).

I used to own a uro but i had to give it to the pet shop cause i could not care for it like it needed once i got my cham. I would definately say go with the cham over the beardie cause they are a lot more mellow and less likely to be aggressive.

well, a cham is not an option - especially for an 11 year old. He wants something handleable and relatively docile, so a beardie would be a better idea. The uromastyx was the other possibility. Did you read my post? LOL!!

I have a very large female egyptian and a male orange saharan.

No one can really make up his mind if he wants one more than the other, hehehehehe, but from my experience, the saharans/nigerian and some mali's are very skiddish and don't really ever get to handleable for a kid to enjoy.

Maybe if cb and you get one when very tiny, they would be much different. My Egyptian is much more tame and sweet as a pet. Remember these guys are very strong, and uros tail whip when frieghtened or angry so keep that in mind for a child.

They need high heat, BUT yes do mainly eat lots of veggies, a few supersworms, or crickets especially while young, but VEGGIES are the main diet, lentils and split peas right out of the bag are a wonderful snack and they usually LOVE dandelines and flowers too!

Uros are pretty awesome, but if it were me for a kid I would have to get a captive bred, much better pet.

You have a beardie, Lost my guy this past Jan, but he was a gentle, lazy, sweet guy ! BUT do eat a ton of buggies while growing.

I would have his mom and him read some care sheets, see what best fits them, as far as caging, temperatures/ food/ what not.
And go from there.

I have had my uros for 6 years , Very Cool !

In that case here is my Crocodile Monitor.

The colours are a little off though...

Lele,

Make SURE they know, that if they don't intend to use insect as feeders, then they most likely should NOT have a Bearded Dragon.

I think it may have been Sheila Platt from Capital Dragons, a very reputable Dragon Breeder in Canada, that I overheard conversing with a beardie owner. The man had a female beardie and was looking for a male for breeding purposes. The female was 3 months older than the male Sheila had planned to sell him. Only, when they showed each other their dragons, the female was just a little more than HALF the males size. He had been feeding her almost excusively vegitation and pellets.

By the looks of her she was healthy, but certainly had stunted growth. I bet it wasn't too easy to give them proper calcium suppliments only eating veggies. Mine only eat the veggies if there is no calcium or vitamin supliment on them. Supplimented crickets are fine, but they just turn the other way when it comes to dusted greens.

Good luck helping your friends.

Thanks Will,

Yeah, I don't think either of them (Matt or mom) really want to deal with the insect thing. I don't mind them, but am slowing turning to roaches as my staple feeder from crix for Darwin (beardie).
