Lamp safety for my beardie

kapeed Oct 23, 2005 08:24 PM

We have fashioned a little "ramp" for our beardie to get up to the window sill. Right now we have a common desk lamp shining onto the top of the ramp so that he can stay warm while looking out the window. The problem is that we are scared to leave him in that room alone (or if we are out of the apartment), because of the risk of fire. The whole setup seems pretty darned secure, but I don't want to take chances. I was wondering if anyone knows of a really solid lamp (one with a wide base or something) that people might use for just this sort of thing. I seem to recall that some iguana owners have used lamps to create basking sites around a room, but I am not sure what type of lamp they are using. Anyway, sort of a weird request.

Is there any way that you can secure it to the table on which it rests? Perhaps with some double stick pads or velcro? You are justified with your fire concerns.

Zoo-Med makes a lamp stand that will hold a hanging fixture. When using it for a cage the cage sits on the base and a height adjustable arm holds the fixture in place. I'm sure it would work great to create a basking spot anywhere. We invested in one when we almost had a fire from a clamp lamp.
