How can you tell if eyecaps are still on?

How can you tell if your snake has an eyecap still there? I have a snake with some interesting discoleration on a piece of it, and wasn't sure if it was an eyecap or not. I can't get it to show up on a picture. I have been misting her a good bit incase it is an eyecap. She was also rubbing her eye on her back. If it is an eyecap, how best should I remove it?

It's kind of tricky to tell if the eye cap is left on sometimes.

Some people use a little Scotch tape (nothing too sticky like duct tape) to pull the retained cap off, but you REALLY, REALLY have to be careful. I feel the chances of hurting the eye in this manner outweigh the benifit of getting the cap off.

I just wait for the next shed and then I put a little K.Y. gel (not Vasoline or any petroleum based gel) on the eye every night for 2 or 3 days leading up to when the shed is going to take place. It should come off then.

Good luck,

Alan
