Getting a Irian Jaya Carpet Python...Hello All

nogard Oct 23, 2005 11:22 PM

Never had one before but I have always wanted one, we were in a reptile center, and they had an adult that has been there for about 4 months, we held it, and did a thorough check for ticks or mites and its clean, it has a scar on its back that healed good, the owner of the store fed him in front of us and the snake has good body weight, he said "alot of people have been interested but the thing just wouldnt sell, and its fairly pretty, but at $150 most people would rather get a pair of baby boas" , Anyways just wanted to say hello and get to know you all, seeing that I am going to be here alot in the future, We are going to pick it up tomorrow or tuesday, I told him that I want to get the cage and temps correct before I took the animal,
thanks

Irian Jayas are great snakes. I would advise purchasing an IJ from a reputable breeder rather than getting an animal that has been around the block and could be a wild caught import. For the same price you can get a captive bred IJ without scars and possible parasites. There are a few for sale in the classifieds. I have done business with Shea Peterson and he has a few for sale that are in your price range. Here is a link...

I am still going with this adult, but I am thinking I may buy a pair of youngsters from that link you provided, the boy we are getting is imported, the reptile center told us that it was, My girlfriend loves him though, for the last few months she said she wants that snake, and we have seen him eat on two different occasions not including the time yesterday, and the scar is from a heat rock the former owner had in its enclosure, so we are going to give it a go, I am going to buy a pair of the hatchlings and raise them up, and give breeding a try with them, I have successfully bred normal ball pythons, and this season I am looking forward to some albinos, pieds and orange ghosts, so I am extremely psyched about that. Also, I am not looking at a price range, money is not an issue with my animals, As long as they are healthy, I will pay the extra cost for them.
Also I am going to construct a cage that is 4 feet long, 3 feet deep and 5 feet tall, is that to large, small or just right? I dont want the animal to stress at the large size or be cramped because the cage is to small, any objections to the size?
