Palpating females and males that dont want to breed

jaskidragons Oct 24, 2005 02:41 AM

It is that time of the season and i dont quite get how to palpate my bi gfemales i have A LOT of females that look like they are producing follicles but i tried to palpate them and i didnt feel anything. Are the FOllicle that hard to feel or am i doing it really wrong. i am letting the females crawl back into their tubs while the go between my thumb and forefinger and i have talked to some of my friends andthey said you will feel at hard bump and then a little chain of beads but i tried that and no luck... has anyone else hadthis problem.
I also have 1 male that will not breed for me . i have cooled him down for 2 weeks and i put him in with a femalethat i thought was producing follicles but nothing. i heard from a firend that if the male seems gay and doesnt want to breed with the female then throw him in with a male adn i tried that for a day and put him back with a female and he still didnt do anything. Yah it could be that the females arent producing follicle but they are doing all the signs and pretty much waving a sign saying i am producing follicles....
Any Suggestions???

Thanks so much

Hi there,

Are you talking about palpating for this season, or have you tried it in the past? Same with your male - are you concerned that he is not breeding this season, or has he never bred for you in the past(but been large enough)?

I started cycling about two weeks ago also, and only about 1/3 of my males (proven) have hooked up yet. It's just REALLY early in the season still. Nothing to worry about there - they'll be going at it soon enough!

As far as follicles in females - I do not expect to feel any follicles in my girls until late December at the EARLIEST - with much better results in January. Also, most of mine do not develop follicles until they are already being bred by a male (although maybe 25% will develop them before they hook up). So, again, if you are talking this season, you are way, way early to worry about follicle development.

It sounds like you have the basic idea about feeling follicles (it's really easy to do) - but you are way too early. Patience, patience!

Good luck,

Christy

I don't normally palpate this early into the season. You might want to wait.

Thumb on the belly right? I'll palpate on numerous occassions for various reasons. Sometimes females will twist while trying to palpate, making it hard to feel the hard lumps.

As far as your male goes, how old is he? What's his size? There are some tricks to put him in the breeding mode: put him in with another, smaller male, put a fresh shed from another male, wait for the female to have a fresh shed.
