Got my Uro! Woo-hoo! Couple questions

AlteredMind99 Oct 24, 2005 11:09 AM

By the way my Mali is doing excellent...he is a bit smaller (4-5inches STL) then i was planning on getting but he is very solid and chunky, with good fat reserves and is active, alert and eating well!

So when i first brought my uro home (day before yesterday) I gave him a decent soak and a good meal and left him with a water dish just in case he was thirsty. I have since removed the water dish....hopw often, if at all should i offer him water? A shallow dish once a week for a few hours? A shallow warm water soak once weekly?

How often do you guys offer water?

Also, he isnt hiding at night when he sleeps...he tend to sleep right out in the open, which seems to go against their natural behaviors...he has several different hides of various sizes, shapes etc...and he uses his hides during the day when he is not basking, but at night he doesnt use them so much...should i be worried?

Thanks

Healthy Uros require no water. Some owners use a soak to help release stuck shed. Water raises enclosure humidity and can lead to a bacterial infection in the tail if not kept dry.

A number of people have said that if a Uro is not using their hide that something is stressing them. As long as the hides are in a variety of places temperature wise (which they looked to be), and they are safe places, as opposed to facing major thoroughfares of your home, I would say he is just getting used to the place. Archie used to sleep in the open quite often, I think he was just too lazy to wake up and go to his hide, lol. Mosca on teh other hand NEVER sleeps outside his hides. If all els is good, I would chalk it up to getting used to the place, and his personality.

Congrats on the new family member! I cannot wait to see pictures.

Oh right, forgot about the water. Did you say it was a mali? I can't remember... Anyway, for the majority of the Uros, you probably don't need to offer water at all. With Archimedes I never did, and I soaked him probably 4-6 times a year at most. Usually when he needed a bath so badly I couldn't stand it any longer. If they start to look like something may be off, I will often feed them some dethawed veggies (super high water content the way I make them, lol). In the end, I think it is a personal choice between you and your Uro. Offer him a little water once a week, if you never see him drink, try 2 or 3 weeks, lol. As I said though, for the vast majority of the Uros a proper diet will take care of their water needs.

Offering a uro water its not necessary with all species except u. benti. U. benti is the only uro that will readily drink water when offered. The only time i ever saw one of mine drink was right after she laid eggs. We offer some romaine every now and then to add water content in their diets. Thats all its good for.

we only soak when one of our uros are sheading, and use a hairdryer on the tail. We dont let the water stand in the sink (leave the drain open, (the water tends to cool off rather quickly)and splash our uros. Have seen some post saying "our little guy gets great exercise when we soak him, he tries to run up the sink. More than likely this is causing a great deal of stress on the little guy (since he my think hes gonna drown). The only time any of ours have done that is when we put water in the sink. The other way the is still and allow us to splash them.

Cool, thank you.

I only soaked him because he had such a long day, and seemed a little dehydrated. He didn't drink, but he did appear pretty relaxed, and didn't run away. The water was very shallow, just over his toes and bottom of belly, and was 100degrees.

He seems to be eating his veggies well, so i guess water shouldnt be a bit deal. I was only worried where its his first few days, i wasnt sure if the added stress would mean more water consumption

Thanks!
