Questions on Florida/Brooksi Kings

michaelb Jul 21, 2003 04:00 PM

This probably is an age-old question, but I'm interested to know where the proper terminology now stands. My understanding is that the light-colored version, native mainly to the SW Florida peninsula and referred to by most herpers as "Brooksi," is in fact the "true" Florida Kingsnake, while the darker version, once known as the Florida Kingsnake and native mainly to the rest of the peninsula, is in fact an intergrade between the Eastern Kingsnake and the true Florida Kingsnake. Is this correct?

I'm looking for a nice cream-colored Florida King, a.k.a Brooksi, or even a nice intergrade. Can anyone provide a ballpark estimate of what a quality specimen goes for these days? Saw one Brooksi advertized in the classifieds for $450, which seems a bit much.

Thanks, michaelb

You are correct on the terminology, but the southern form is still referred to as "brooksi" within the hobby. As far as nice looking babies....expect to pay $100-200 for choice babies. Keith, how much were you getting for your goldfires? They are nice! My White phase are fetching higher prices and sell out months before the adults are even out of brumation.......same with the flames and hypo flames. You can find nice deals, but most are average looking as adults.

As for the $450 adult......she is a super, proven axanthic female. IMHO, that is a great price for a young proven female axanthic. Sold only a few minutes after being posted. Have fun.

Normal, but not. This girl is not axanthic like some people think. Just another "normal" brooksi that is het for axanthic.

Essentially the Brooksi King is a Florida Kingsnake but an extremely yellow one. The farther north you go the more Eastern Kingsnake genetic occur. Prices of Brooksi range from 50-100 bucks. Its not easy to find good looking animals as in a nice high yellow one with little black.

Thanks for the info, guys. Keith, is it just the camera angle, or is that a BIG Brooksi?

Maybe a little of both. Thats my male he is a 98 hatch and is 5 feet long give or take a few inches.
