Unprepared for Baby Jacksons!

vegasbilly Oct 24, 2005 05:54 PM

Ok, I thought I'd start off completely honest! My imported female dropped 14 today. She must have come to me newly gravid as in my opinion she was too young to be bred. Interestingly enough, she wasn't distended - no real outwardly visible signs.

So, I've moved them all into temporary housing -glass tank 12'x12"x18" (lxwxh) and have it filled w/Passion Vine cuttings. I'll get a screened enclosure asap. I can get a small culture of fruit flies locally and have ordered a couple of bigger cultures for longer term needs. I've been told to mist 2-3 times a day and start trying to feed them tomorrow.

I'm sure mortality is high, any tips as to how to increase my/their odds? Ambient temps are 78F in the room. Do they need a basking spot at this time. Any and all advice will be greatly appreciated.

Adam,
Yeah, that's my boy "Hunter." He turned 3 yesterday. He's learning the reptiles as fast as I can teach him LOL. I had him holding a yearling green tree python over the weekend. 2 more years and he'll be cleaning cages so I can free up my weekends.

For advice, I would just recommend similar things to what Victor said below. I put my panthers into small screen cages right out of the egg, and have done well with them that way. Keep them wet (misted heavily), and let them dry out between soakings. Make sure none of them end up with a drop of water stuck to their heads after you mist (they can drown). Heat from the florescent will be enough for a few months, just keep it right on the screen top so they can get right up to it if they want to, and keep room temps in the mid to high 70's. Here's a picture I took yesterday of a 1 day old panther:

I got ya' beat Tyler! My 12 year old has been breeding Beardeds since he was 6 - he produced 90 babies this year - 'course w/middle school come girls, now its tackle fotball...funny how the herps don't hold his attention like they used to!! My 6 year old wants to take care of these baby Jacksons in the worst way! Cool thing is its taken me adding Chams to my collection to FINALLY get my wife involved. She's a Lt. w/Metro PD and has a huge male Veiled in her office and half of the officers up in the Academy bought Beardeds from my son! There's another 6-7 that are waiting on the Veilds to hatch.

Hi,

Congrats. So, may I know what size is your female Jackson? Cos I recently gained a pair and wonder when I should put them to breed.

I'm guessin' 6" long. She's way smaller than the male. Thei first day I got them I had them together just for a few minutes. She gaped at him the minute he approached her o I separated them right then.

I've been comparing notes with other jackson chameleon breeders/ importers who on occassion have had to deal with baby jacksons. Seems the key to higher survival rate with baby jacksons is as follows:
1. segration/isolation
2. high humidity
3. lower than expected temps
4. PLENTY of appropriate size prey items
The first two points being of upmost importance. I forget the name of the poster a couple of years back (Big Tatoo maybe?), but he experienced about 80% survival on his jacksons by placing EACH baby in his own little all-screen enclosure. Another previous forum member actually raised his baby jacksons by free-ranging them all in a HUGE greenhouse-type enclosure. I have myself have had about 50% survival rate by raising baby jacksons in small plastic file boxes with screen sides, running about 3 per enclosure.
Good luck!
