Used Cage a bad idea?

bigmansm Oct 24, 2005 08:50 PM

I found a really good deal on two used cages. Heres my concern.
THe guy selling the cage is the original owner, He previously had a veiled chameleon in the cage.

The small cage has been sitting for a year now.

My concern, the owner has cats which were near the cage at certain times.

Is it possable that the parasites on the cats are in the cage and can't be killed? Are there harmful parasites on veiled chameleons that may effect my chameleon (which i dont own yet or know which bred i am getting).

Im trying to get the habitat setup before i get a creature

If you properly sanitize the entire thing, it should be fine.

Cats don't generally have parasites and most would be different. But regardless of what - or when - something was in there you need to thoroughly clean and sterilize/sanitize. I assume it is a screen cage? I would take all the panels apart, use a high power spray (any good garden sprayer attachemnet) to loosen anything. Then soak, or thoroughly wipe down all the panels, hardware, etc. with a bleach/water solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water ). You can put it in a spray bottle so it will get into crevices. Then rinse well and let it air dry (if possible. if you live in a warm region keep it outside for a few days in the sun). You might then want to give it a once over with Nolvasan or other comprable disinfectant. This should be done to any component that your cham may come in contact with - rocks, wood, branches, etc. You definitely want to do all of this before you get him so you are sure he is going into a safe place.

what is Nolvasan? Is this a reptile product?

I went ahead and picked up the cages. They are awesome. I did the first cleaning today. Where i sprayed everything with a high powered hose.

I was worried that cleaning the anything with bleech would be a bad idea. I was thinking of throwing the branches and anything else that comes apart in the dish washer. The dish washer would use very high tmeperature water to really kill any bacteria that is present.

So cleaning everything with some strong soaps is OKAY? as long as they are rinsed and dryed properly?

Ill get some pictures up tomorrow. Im so stoked!
