Thermal gradient..

When setting up your leo tank. Of course the optimum temp seems to be around 88 degrees. With my UTH, how big a radius should I be trying to get at that temp? Should it just be that warm around the hide with the temp cooling the further out you go? I think I might be trying to get too big an area to that temp and it is ultimately making hotter spots in my tank. Where should I take my temp readings from?? Thanks

I am using a 20gal long.

At least a quarter of the tank should be heated...half the tank is even better. The UTH will heat the area it covers as well as warm the floor maybe an inch away from it. If the UTH covers half the floor of the tank then you are fine, but no more than that. Take your readings from the area directly over the center of the UTH (if you are using a digital thermometer).
