do i have this right????

NotABigDeal Oct 25, 2005 12:05 AM

i dont know jack about genetics....or do i? you tell me. i hope this isnt way off and i sound stupid. 50% het albino male with a normal equals offspring that are poss hets as well (whatever the percent is). to prove daddy i would need one of his offspring to be a female het as well? correct? it sounds good any way....hehe. a visual would confirm BOTH of them. right. man i hope so, or i will feel stupid. thanks for the replys.

That's about it. It's a long process with possible hets. If he is indeed a het, it's going to be a matter of breeding him back to the RIGHT females to prove him out, and then you may just not hit on the odds if you get a small clutch. Also, once you prove him, he's a het, no longer a 50% het, so then all his offspring become 50% hets, unless bred to something other than normals...then whatever is appropriate, it seems like you have the general idea. Take care!

Technically and logically speaking, this is not quite right. The offspring of a possible het to a normal CAN be 50% possible hets OR they CAN be 0% possible hets. It all depends on what the father finally turns out to be.
You must remember that the "50% possible het" father is going to either be a 100% het or a 0% het, normal. If, in the end, he turns out to be a 0% het normal, NONE of his offspring will have had ANY chance of being het, YET some would have labelled them 25% possible hets. There is a big difference between a 25% chance of being het and a 0% chance of being het.

thanks for all the replys. i realize it all depends on the daddy. this was just an example just to see if i knew what i was talkin about IN GENERAL. no need to pick it apart.

But it is a gamble. At least with an actual het you know that some of those babies should be carrying the gene.
