Substrate Advice plz?

FrogNoob Oct 25, 2005 01:27 AM

As the name implies I am a nooblet to frogs and vivs. I am constructing 2 tanks. 1 will be my holding/observation tank (10 gal), the other is a 29 gal hex front. The 29 gal I am building to be my display tank. I am using the dripwall method as shown on the black jungle site, but am also going with false bottom and a floor. I have been reading everything I can get my browser on, and am noticing a mix of opinions about substrates. Some say don't use organic material, while others seem to be using dirt/bark mixes. Gravel alone is another option I have considered. I really dont want to be digging around the tank cleaning out rotting soil and such. So, does anyone have any advice on a proper substrate for this type of set-up that will be beneficial to plants and frogs alike? I dont have frogs yet, since I still have many questions and would like to get the 29 gallon planted and growing before even getting frogs. I plan to put them in the observation tank for 4-6 weeks while the large tank gets established.

I forgot to mention, most of my planting will be on the background. I really only want a little creeping plant on the substrate layer.

well if nearly all your plants are on the back ground with a lil on the bottom. do some hydroponics with gravel. ivs, pothos, philodendrons, and a number of other plants can be grown in gravel and water. heck some aquatic/ ermergent bog plants would be fun then.

other wise if dirt is the way to go thetre are loads of mixes out there that will work well if you just seek them out ^^

hope this helps
