I think Bredl's are the smallest, and higher priced.

West Papuans (AKA Irian Jayas) are the consistently the smallest of all of the available Carpets. There are a few big ones but they certainly are not the norm. I know of one Bredls that is over 9 feet and at least 20 alone in friends/acquaintences collections that are over 8 feet. Bredls certainly are not the smallest. In fact, I would say they are one of the largest, ranking up there with coastals. I have only a pair. They are 4 years old and the male is 6 feet and the female is 7 feet. They still have much growing to do in my opinion. Overall, from what I have gathered from Folks like Doug Price and Casey Lasik, I would put Bredls in the 6-8 foot range. Just my .02.

Irian Jayas for sure! They are the only ones not from mainland Australia. Island forms are usually smaller than their mainland counter-parts.

They are also the only ones legally imported to the US and are often the most readily available because. Dont get an import, you can pick one up on kingsnakes.com's classifieds from a breeder for 100 dollars or less.

Good luck with everything!

Heres my adult female IJ at 2.5 yrs and about 5ft.

Also, I noticed you mentioned getting a pair of jungles possibly... Most people on here would agree that if you get yourself a pair of Will Leary's Jungles, you'll be hooked on carpets for life.

A quality Jungle makes most Irian Jayas look ugly, and they dont really get too big to manage. It would be my recommendation for your first carpet python. Only if its a good one though

"A quality Jungle makes most Irian Jayas look ugly"

Yes but a quality Irian Jaya makes most quality jungles look boring! LOL
Here's some of our West Papuans (IJs) to compare to Jungles....

So why get jungle with 2 colors (black and gold at best) when one can have a West Papuan with every color of the sunset! Not to mention Jungles start out hatching ugly, get pretty for a while and often develop a melanin wash with age that darkens them quite a bit, detracting from their beauty. While with WPs,
they are born brilliant red and get better and better with age. Every shed cycle makes me feel like a kid waiting to open a Xmas present! But this is just my very very biased opinion. Over the years we have kept many Jungles but in the end, the WPs stayed (over 60 at present count) and the Jungles left. We actually have two neat Jungles. Don't get me wrong, they can be nice. But they just don't hold my attention like a WP.
Good luck with whatever carpet you wish to get. There's a carpet flavor for all tastes!

My IJs were breeding last night. The female is twice the size of the male, both are 03 babies. I hesitated putting them together, because the last time I did, the female attacked the male. This time, maybe he smelled better, lol.
As far as IJ's go, I've seen pics of both Mcdowelli and variegata that look almost identical to IJ. Not surprising since their range overlaps and they all probably originated from New Guinea, and crossed the land bridge (as did Chonros and white-lips) many years ago.

I guess this forum would be boring if we all agreed on everything.
My statement about IJs being inferior to Jungles in terms of looks was pretty dumb. Its like saying blonds cant hold a candle to brunetts! There are some IJs that look better than some jungles and visa versa. Its purely a matter of taste.

My female Irian Jaya is my favorite snake.(pics a couple of messages before)

Yasser, those photos you posted are amazing! They are not your average IJ by any means though, and are not an accurate representation of the typical IJ. Very very nice animals all the same. The one looks hypo.

Jaykis, I have to know... did those 2 IJs of yours cool first? You're not going to cool them (at least the female) now that they have mated are you??? I have kept various carpets as pets for almost 10 yrs now, but this year will be my first breeding of carpets, or any snake for that matter.

Thanks,

Joe

Joe...the last time I bred Carpets successfully was when I had them 18 years ago. I sold the parents and got out of herps shortly after that. By chance, the Coastals that mated last winter and produced 24 eggs (they went bad, my fault) WERE cooled down, but only by accident when I bought them at the local livestock auction.
My IJs were not cooled this time, but the male had not been with her before, so she was new to him. I removed him this morning to put him back in his cage and noticed dried sperm on him about 4" above the cloaca, so he's doing something. Noticed the same with my larger male Olive last week. No, I don't intend to cool the IJ male at this point.

I wonder if IJs require a less intense cooling period than the other variations. They are from a region closer to the equator where the annual temps vary very little. Its more like a wet and dry season than a warm and cool.

Good luck this year and thanks for the interesting info.

Those are indeed beautiful snakes! But I have to admit, I'm still partial to JCP's.

Do a google for the country and temps. You can find charts for rainfall and high and low temps for a city within the country, and also altitude. Very convenient.

Thanks Jaykis

I was able to find not only the temp variations in Port Moseby, but also when the rains started. Very helpful.

Thats so awesome, Jaykis. Even though the internet just arrived on the scene, its hard to imagine a world without it. This forum would not exist for example The exchange of information is a beautiful thing.
