Yearling males

DanW Oct 25, 2005 11:43 AM

What experiences have you had trying to breed yearling males? My yearling male is not showing any interest. Is this normal and if so what should I do? Do yearling males seem to be able to do the job or is there a lot of slugs? Please share your experiences and advice.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan,I think yearlings are too young or have no interest in breeding.I always thought the earliest that you can breed a male was 18 MONTHS.

The normal standard age for breeding males is 18 months. There are always exceptions, however. An occasional 14 month old male may complete the job. But that is an exception rather than the rule.

Although i've heard of 10 month old animals breeding, and 12 month old animals producing viable young, in most cases, there are many slugs and/or very few fertile young.
