1 year old male has lost interest in food... should i be concerned?

SuperGeckoberry Jul 21, 2003 05:23 PM

for the past couple months my male albino has eaten only 1-3 food items per week. He might be sick, but it's weird because he is not acting sick, i.e. he has not been losing weight, he has not been lethargic and his poo looks normal. Is this common?

one website said that they may not eat during breeding season... I have a female leo in a nearby tank... does anyone know if this, or any other possible reasons, could explain his loss of appetite? i just sent in a fecal to the vets today and waiting for the results.

Anyone who could shed light on this situation would be greatly appreciated- thanks.

Hmmm. Could be that it is breeding season and he is of age. Try offering him different kind of food than what he is used to eating. I too have realized that my male has slowed down in what he is eating. Never realized it could have been due to the 2 new females I just got a few weeks ago. You think he can smell them?

DOnt worry yet. If he begins to lose weight or if his feces change then take him to the vet. For right now just relax.

What have you been feeding him? Sometimes they get bored with the same food over and over so try something different. If you feed crix try some mealies of superworms. If he isnt losing weight and doesnt appear to be lethargic or inactive, chances are hes just bored with hisfood or going on a fast for whatever reason. All I can suggest is that you try different food items to get his attention. now, if he starts losing weight drasticly and becomes lethargic, then its time for a vet trip. Until then, try not to worry too much. Later

yeah, i thought this could be a reason too. ever since I've owned him, I fed him only mealworms w/the occasional waxie. two weeks ago i tried varying up his diet w/crickets and superworms. he went for the crickets, but only ate a small amount of them per week and will not eat any food on a regular basis.

maybe i'll try butterworms and silk worms... anyone know can you feed these on a regular basis or do you need to ration these like waxies?

no its not a good idea to use wax worms and butter worms for a staple diet they are to high in fat also dont feed to many at a time because the leo can get addicted to them. Hope this helps!

Silkworms are high in calcium and very good for your leo, though the downfall is they are expensive, but yeah you can feed those as a staple, but not butterworms, need to ratio those like waxies. Later
