Dwarf caiman changing color????

reptileforest Oct 25, 2005 05:03 PM

Hello,
Just wondering if it is ok for a baby dwarf to change his colors. I know that adults are lighter in colors than the babies. Well my baby dwarf is getting white patches in clusters on some parts of his skin. Seems like its either his skin is streching out from growth, or is a change of pigmentation? I just wanna know if its normal or not?

PS: does anyone add any substances to their water or do you use just fresh water for your caimans? I just hope the pigmentation is not caused by water chemicals or salinization. I just use regular sink water and don't want to end up with any salt deposits on my caiman.

Caimans to my knowledge shouldn't have any white "splotches" or anything like that on their skin. Do you change the water regularly? Tap water is fine, as that is what I use.

Changing colors is not unusual in crocodilians, but this sounds like a mycosis or something like this. A vet would be helpful - soon.

thanks for your concern and advice folks, but it was just a false alarm. I am using UVB full spectrum lights and I think that it was the light shining on his body from above. When I pulled him out of the water, he was all fine with no marks or change of color. But That kinda scared me in the beginning

How close is your caiman to a heating element (ceramic or infrared/incandesent bulb)?
