feeding guinea pigs to fatten breeder female jcp?

reptilefrk Jul 21, 2003 05:46 PM

While visiting a local shop recenty it was suggested that I switch my breeder female jcp from large/jumbo f/t rats to guinea pigs to "fatten her up" prior to brumation. While I dont wish to unnecessarily alter her biological processees, this has sparked my curiosity. She is not underweight by no measure ( 7.5 ft/ 18 lbs.). Seems to me obesity would become an issue?

MY QUESTION- Has anyone else ever switched their breeders food to prepare them for brumation and mating? If so, when and from what to what?

well, i have never swicthed a breeders food, and certainly not to guinea pigs.

my only advice is not to do it. i work at a pet store, and yes we've fed a guinea pig or two to the 11' burmese, but she'll eat anything. the reason for my advice is because i have seen many snake owners come in and complain that ever since they changed their food source (for example going from mice to hamsters or gerbils for some 'fun') the snake won't eat anything else. i DO NOT know if the rule applies to guinea pigs, but i would be afraid that my snake would then refuse to eat anything else, and guinea pigs are more expensive than rats.

i would say just feed her a little more often, or a little more at each sitting.

Mind you, i am no authority on breeding JCPs, nor do i know if the gerbil/hamster rule applies to guinea pigs.
i hope i helped, at least a little.

Thanks for your input, I to agree that changing foods can cause more problems than prevent. Guess I'm lookin to see if it's worth the trouble. again THANK YOU.

Definitely more problems than it's worth and your female has plenty of weight as it is. That's a monster of a jungle.
