Quick question about how and what you feed your Boiga's...

hefte Oct 26, 2005 01:24 AM

I have a 5ft, slender Boiga Dendrophila Dendrophila and am currently feeding two adult mice a week. He seems to have no trouble taking them but sheds only once every couple months. He has the highest motabolism of any snake I have ever kept and poops almost daily. I purchased the snake almost as a rescue from a pet shop that was keeping it in the back room in a ten gallon aqaurium with bark dust as substrate. They are illegal here and I bought it for nearly nothing. I have had him for about six months or so and he has been doing very well, growing at a consistent pace, and no real health problems. it had some strange bumps around it's neck that have cleared up and takes food regularly. Just wondering what and how often you guys feed yours. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you in advance, Eric-

My pair are 4' and about to get bumped up. I feed on a two week schedule so that will be 2 AM. Are you misting yours? (they like it)

What state are you in? They are legal here - Florida (with license).

Mine gets mice weekly. It was eating rats for awhile but seemed to like the mice better. I think its cause the same size mouse moves around alot more than a fuzzy rat since a mouse would be more developed.
I have offered it FK mice but they are always still there in the morning.
Mine also doesnt shed real often. They may do well on a twice a week feeding schedual. Might be somthing worth trying.
Which of your snakes will take non live food?

Where they are legal, but they are not legal in my county. Oregon has some pretty crazy laws regarding exotics, for instance, you can own a black and white spitting cobra, but may not own boiga irregularis. Go figure, has to do with that Guam thing. I do mist daily, the humidity remains around 60%. It's not that he has bad sheds, it's the frequency in relation to their metabolism that concerned me. I feed mine fresh killed, I kill them right before his lights go out and they are gone within an hour. To my knowledge, before I got him he had never had anything but live food. He switched very easily. Still won't eat in front of me unless I hide and watch, but once was enough of that. All of my snakes get fresh killed and none have ever refused. Thanks for all your replies, Eric-

Where in oregon are you? I'm in springfield oregon. And I know what you mean about the laws not making any sense.

I live in Portland, and Multnomah County has stricter laws than the state. I actually bought it right out of a pet shop here, it was listed as a tiger rat snake. When I saw it I knew it wasn't a Tiger but I couldn't place it, mostly because I had never seen the black and white phase Mangrove, but after a few minutes I figured it out, and the guy gave it to me for $50.00 with food and a cage. It's a cool snake, not overly aggressive although it bit my snake stick the other day and held on. He always wraps around his water bowl so when I change his water and go to put the bowl back he's always in the way. I had the bowl in one hand and was trying to scoot him over a little when he just lost it and tried to kill the snake stick. Usually I use my hands but had a wierd feeling, good thing I guess.

Portland is only 2 hrs from here. I have heard that they have tougher laws up there regarding snakes. Just goes to show you what pet shops know.

He knew exactly what he was doing. He also keeps white lipped vipers and king cobras "somewhere on the premesis" but doesn't let too many people know about it.
