Another bark question...

Kiknskreem Oct 26, 2005 12:40 PM

Back again folks. A few weeks ago I got some repti-bark, and wary of parasites I boiled all of it to make it safe. What a pain in the patoot! So today I was making the rounds and saw a clone product which makes a big point of how it is already heat treated (the reptibark people don't do it I believe because it lessens the wood's ability to hold moisture). Anyway, my question is should I trust these guys (the product is Naturebark) or sterilize it myself to be safe. As well, has anyone used a conventional oven to treat bark as opposed to boiling? Seems much cleaner but perhaps a fire hazard. As usual, looking forward to your input

Here's a link to at thread that I feel had some great input from many people, coming from an ecological standpoint about boiling/sanitizing substrates... Just in case you missed it.

I personally feel that people worry too much about this subject..

As for the flash point of bark in a household oven, you've got me.

Cheers,

The main issue I have found with commercial bedding isn't the naturally occuring pests that may be in it, but the mites that may find their way into the bedding while at the petshop. I have purchased aspen from petco on several occasions and usually if I look through it I can find mites.
